I am an Italian-American abstract artist, writer, and art educator living and working in New York City. Born in Staten Island, inspired by the evolution of the city of New York, and the ever-present chaos of the city's tourist maps, I allow myself to structure pieces of artwork with a variety of different, yet controlled mediums. In being a part of the art world, my goal is to break boundaries – to defy traditionalism. Conceptually, my work depicts a highly physical and dynamic aesthetic – portraying free and expressive line quality. Working with oils, acrylics, and house paint as well as Japanese paper, duct tape and such found materials as wine corks and bottle caps, I create works with strong surface energy and texture. Often using a pouring technique to apply the paint, I create vibrant “drip-like” patterns that add to the feeling of spontaneity in my work. But, that spontaneity is expressed in precise, geometric terms. Early in my artistic career, I discovered the ability to use line and movement to unique effect. That same line quality, fluidity of medium, and largely bright color palette also shows true in my mixed-media and still-life paintings. Recently, I have become incredibly inspired by floral motif’s that have made their way into my still-life paintings. My mixed-media paintings are a series, constructed using fine Japanese papers and an acrylic medium. Inspired by Michelangelo’s The Creation of David, the flowing movement in this series is representative of the moment when the angels’ fingers ever so slightly touch. My sculptures are personal narratives, touching on the themes of image, likeness, and wholesomeness. In combining emotion, movement and order, I achieve a highly personal and sophisticated artistic style. My work is an escape into freedom.
